Miscellaneous Information
Over the years scientists and technologists have spent a
great deal of time, money and effort, attempting to find a
solution to the problems of using mineral-based hydrocarbon
lubricants. In PLM's products, the new generation synthetic
oils and greases have many impressive qualities that make
them better and more environmentally friendly than the more
traditional lubrication methods. We have listed some of
those advantages here:
Limitations of Mineral Oils
In considering practical applications, the following
factors must be considered in the choice of lubricant to
determine whether such a product will impose unreasonable
restraints on the required performance and operation of the
mechanical device:
- Limits on high temperature
performance
These include: high volatility at elevated temperatures;
flammability; no resistance to thermal degradation
leading to gumming; varnishing; and ultimately to
carbonisation.
- Low temperature performance is
poor
Even with additives (pour point depressants), they are
limited in the minimum temperature at which they can
operate.
- Oxidation stability limits
Stability is not good in the presence of metals.
Oxidation of mineral oils often leads to staining and
chemical attack of metals, particularly high copper
containing alloys.
- Solvent and chemical resistance
Mineral oils in general have only limited ability to
withstand solvents or to operate in aggressive
environments.
Advantages of Synthetics
While the performance of mineral oils can be enhanced by
the use of chemical additives, they have certain inherent
disadvantages. Synthetic lubricants are blended from
specially selected base fluids, which provide superior
lubrication properties.
- High lubricity
They have high lubricity, excellent shear stability and
will not break down or harden through prolonged use.
- Will not degrade
They are extremely stable at elevated temperatures and
will not degrade to form harmful gum and carbon
residues.
- Wide range of temperatures
They operate in the widest temperature ranges and
demonstrate superior adhesion and cohesion properties.
- Chemically inert
They are chemically inert and compatible with most
engineering materials.
- Clean and odourless
They have superior dielectric properties. They are
clean, odourless, non-toxic and water resistant.
